Core Repository for Earth Sciences (CORES)

Core Repository for Earth Sciences (CORES)

The joint CGS/Mines Core Repository for Earth Science (CORES) showcases a diverse array of rock cores and cuttings, primarily from across Colorado but also including materials from other regions. These samples are invaluable for understanding subsurface geologic conditions, including energy and mineral resources, groundwater systems, and fluid migration pathways. Many cores have associated high-resolution images that allow for remote viewing and analysis. You can browse the map or search the repository by location, formation, or well name to find samples relevant to your area of interest.

This repository is a collaborative effort between the Colorado Geological Survey and the Colorado School of Mines, with funding support from CGS, the U.S. Geological Survey, and Robert J. Weimer.

Special thanks to Matthew “Josh” Shaw, who cataloged and imaged the cores, and to Stephen Sonnenberg for his technical consultation.
